TalkTiles

Install it on an iPad

Adding TalkTiles to the home screen makes it open full-screen like a normal app and keeps it working with no internet. It takes about 30 seconds.

On an iPad (Safari)

  1. Open Safari and go to this website, then tap Open TalkTiles.
  2. Let it finish loading once while you have internet (this saves it for offline use).
  3. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up, at the top of Safari).
  4. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
  5. Tap Add in the top corner. The TalkTiles icon now sits on the home screen.
  6. Open it from the home screen. It runs full-screen and works even in airplane mode.
Tip: use it once with internet before you rely on it offline, so all the pictures get saved to the device. After that, no connection is needed.
No sound? On iPhone and iPad, flip the physical ring/silent switch on the side of the device to the "ring" position (no orange showing). Safari mutes spoken words while that switch is set to silent, even though the ringer has nothing to do with the app.
On an iPhone? TalkTiles works, but a phone's landscape screen is too short for the grid to stay readable. Pictures and labels get squeezed down to nearly nothing. An iPad (or similar tablet) is strongly recommended.

On an Android tablet (Chrome)

  1. Open Chrome and go to TalkTiles; let it load once.
  2. Tap the menu (top-right).
  3. Tap Add to Home screen (or Install app), then confirm.

Guided Access (optional but recommended)

To keep a child inside the app and prevent accidental exits, turn on Apple's Guided Access: iPad Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access. Then, in TalkTiles, triple-click the side/home button to lock into the app.
